A Harbor Breeze fan was installed in our home when we bought it two years ago- I can't find any record of the model, as the home's previous owners didn't seem to keep any paperwork of that sort. It is a remote control fan with no pull cords or manual switches of any kind, except for the switch that changes fan direction. Today we had a power surge, and the fan did not work afterward. I smelled burning, and opened up the fan to find the circuit board of the receiver fried. We purchased a new receiver and installed it, but nothing is happening. I have checked the dip settings already, and have checked the ac wires to make sure that there is current going in. All troubleshooting manuals I have been able to find (either included with the receiver or searching online) have stated that the fan needs to be on high and the light needs to be turned on manually for the remote to work, but there is no way for me to do this without pull cords. Any ideas what else I could try?

I would never have advised trying to repair a burnt Barbor Breeze, just replace it. How did you test for power; black to white, black to green or black to fan housing?

The repair had seemed straightforward and we couldn't afford a whole new fan, so I suppose that's what I get for trying to be handy.

I actually used a multimeter to test before replacing it. Testing it a second time after I posted the question, I'm getting no current in though, so I'm going to talk to an electrician tomorrow. The wiring in much of this house is pretty shot.

Make sure its disconnected tonight and wire nut the wires coming out of the ceiling box. Do you have fuses or breakers and have you confirmed them too?

Thank you, I'll do that. I have breakers (the breaker box is new- we had it installed to replace an old screw fuse box a few months ago), and I've checked that it is back on. Other things on the same breaker are functioning.
