I have (2) 250GB HDDs for the same PC. One is a backup clone that is kept packed outside the PC for emergency.

They were both loaded with the same XP Home CD at the same time, and both updated to SP-3.

I want the keyboard Sleep Button to put the PC into HIBERNATE, not Standby.

The HDD in the PC now has the following settings to do so:

Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced Tab > Power Buttons Section At Bottom:
“When I Press The Sleep Button” > Drop-down List > Hibernate > Apply > OK
(Hibernate is enabled on the Hibernate Tab)

On the other HDD, this option is missing: “When I Press The Sleep Button” > Drop-down List > Hibernate
The only thing that is there is: "When I press the Power Button" > Turn off the computer

Does anyone know how I can restore this "Hibernate when Sleep Button is Pressed" option on HDD #2?

Odd that it is different when loaded at the same time from the same XP CD...

Is Hibernate enabled on the Hibernate tab on the 2nd drive?

Yes

All power settings are identical on both drives.

It's just that Hibernate option w/ sleep button is missing.

PS: Actually, I have 2 backup clones and they are both missing this setting. Just the installed HDD has it.

Could the type of keyboard have anything to do with it? Some of mine have a sleep button and some don't. But I swapped them around and it didn't make any difference.

Have read through everything I can find on "Standby Option Missing From Power Management".

I had this feature on one of my 3 HDD clones for this PC, and now that has literally disappeared before my eyes.

Check the following:

• Compare the devices listed in the device manager. Are they identical?

If they were built individually, that isn't cloning, and I suspect your build steps were not exactly identical. Instead of spending the time figuring out why one doesn't have it, stick the hibernating drive in and clone it with Acronis or similar software.

Unfortunately, the only drive that had the options listed in power management has lost them too. They just disappeared. So, I can't do the comparison you suggested anymore.

Also to clarify, I build one Master (on a very old 40GB HDD since my copy of XP is pre-SPx), add SP3, then clone it to 2 other HDDs, both 250GB. One of the 250's then becomes the unused Master for cloning. The other is my "Everyday" HDD. That one has been in use for about 6 months, so I wouldn't want to clone it "backwards" to my Masters since it's got a 1/2 year of muck on it. All moot, since the setting disappeared.

From what I have read, this sounds like an audio or video driver issue?? Don't really understand the relationship. Ran a search for new drivers using XP's device manager, but they all say they're up to date.

Drivers have to support power management or else the machine may not resume properly. Normally, this type of issue is due to failure to install the chipset driver after installing Windows resulting in the hardware not being properly detected. However, since hibernate was available and is now not I don't think this is the case.

• Has the hardware changed since the drives were built?
• How much memory and free disk space does the machine have? Hibernating saves the contents of memory to disk in a file named hiberfile.sys. You might also trying defragmenting the disk, but I don't know if the disk space needs to be contiguous.

There is a command-line tool called POWERCFG that can be run in a command-prompt. POWERCFG /? Will spit out the syntax. POWERCFG /A will show available sleep states. POWERCFG /DEVICEQUERY Flag (valid flags listed by POWERCFG /?) can be used to see which devices support what sleep states to determine if there is a culprit.

This is so hard to describe, I wish I could attach a screenshot.

I do have Hibernate and Standby available on the "Logout" dialog box.

Previously, in control panel > power management > advanced tab: there was a setting called: "When I press the sleep button, I want my computer to: (dropdown list with choices of) Standby / Hibernate / etc.

This is what is gone.

I want my sleep button to put the PC in hibernate, as I was able to do before this setting disappeared. Now the sleep button only goes into Standby.

Just above it is a similar question about what you want to power button on the PC to do. That is still there.

There are actually quite a few people online asking about this same disappearance, but so far no useful answers on other forums.

I understood your issue from the beginning. I was trying to determine if the machine isn't offering the option because it detects something that doesn't support hibernation. If you manually choose to hibernate, does the computer hibernate and resume successfully?
