How to prevent basement floor drain from backing up
I built ranch style home with finished basement in 1992. Directly in front of the bath room in basement is a floor drain that backed up.Water spouted about 4 feet with black guk in it the guk was also in the shower and toilet of the basement bathroom

What can I do to prevent this from happening in the future

You have a blockage in the drain line after the floor drain. You can plug the drain but the other fixtures may then back up. Have the main drain line snaked, through the floor drain if possible, and then see if that doesn't help things out.

    I agree with ma0641...

    You can do 2 things:

    1. Keep your drains clean. Snake them preventively
    2. Install Check-Valve on the floor drain park

If you plug the drain inlet then sewer will back up into next plumbing fixtures
