Can you tell us more? Is there a court order? Has the father been paying child support? How far away does the father live?

If there is a visitation order in place, then the custodial parent MUST make the child available for that visitation. They must encourage the child to go through with the visitation. But they do not have to physically force the child to go with the NCP.

If the child won't the NCP can go to the court and try to compel visitation.

Right. In other words, the 12 year old generally doesn't have the right to disobey his parents. If he is told to "go visit your father", he doesn't have a legal right to refuse.

And the custodial parent should not be telling the child bad things about the other parent, or allowing them to even consider that they could not go.

If for example the child does not go, you can be talken to court ( assuming there is a court order) for contempt
