What causes the fan on my trane unit not to turn.
The fan will not spin on its on, it will work fine if I manually turn the fan to start it. What would cause that?
I unhooked the single wire from one side of the capacitor and joined it to the compressor side of capacitor and the unit seems to be working good.

I assume you are talking about the blower fan, if not tell me. The fan has more than one set of winding, a starter winding kind of kick starts the fan from a dead stop to get it up to speed. If the starter winding is shot you can spin by hand to get it started and then it may run just fine. I would set your stat on fan ON rather than fan AUTO. Kick start it by hand and just let it run 24/7. House will feel more comfortable and electric cost will be on very slightly higher, way less than a new $375 motor.
