I put a baby gate at the top of the staircase leading to a basement in a split level house and it dented in the wall and pushed in about a 8x8 section of the drywall (sheetrock?) the problem is the section that separated completely did so right at the stud? stair? both vertically and horizonally side and bottom. Does this make sense? and then on the right side is broken drywall (sheetrock) that's held together mainly by the brown paper stuff on the back, and I can't access it from behind, unless I go through the other wall. WHAT DO I DO?! It's not completley unfixable is it?

Quite easy to fix. Show us a picture.

Sounds like whoever put the drywall in cheated a bit at the stud. Remove the broken piece. Screw or nail a "sleeper" to the stud faces, a 1X2 should work. That gives you a 3/4" surface. Now, slide a 1X4, flat surface out, at the edge of the other side so you can put drywall screws through the existing wall into the 1X4. You should now have 2 surfaces to rescrew the broken piece. Put some construction adhesive on the wooden pieces and screw the old drywall into the wooden pieces you installed. Wait a day or so and finish the repair with tape and mud. Search Google ot Youtube for "drywall repair". Next time, put a piece of plywood between the wall and the locking piece on the gate.

Good advice from ma0641 regarding the video. You don't actually fix this hole, you cut it out bigger than it is and put in a large patch, easier than it ounds but if you never did it before a handyman might save you time. YouTube - ‪Easy Drywall Repair a typical home improvement‬‏
