Hi,my wife has just got our 30month old son off the breast and in the last week or so he has been waking up to 3times a night screaming for up to 10 minutes at a time.We have read up on night terrors and are pretty sure it is not that.At first it was a little hard to get him onto the bottle but he has now adjusted and no longer cries formthe boob.Iss this normal form him to be waking like this or is it some sort of withdrawal to getting off the boob.

No, this isn't a reaction from being weaned from breast to a bottle, although it might be a reaction to changes in how he is being handled. Had your wife taken him into her/your bed to breast-feed, so that he is not used to being in his own bed alone? Did she spend time breast-feeding him and rocking him and maybe talking softly to him, but now he is given a bottle when he wakes and is laid back down in his crib -- and misses the warmth of his mom's body?

(By the way, do not allow him to have a bottle in bed. This can easily lead to problems with his baby teeth.)

First up sorry about the term used, I was typing straight from the top of my head with no offense intended,I will ensure to read over what I have written before sending.Our son is still in our bed and everything is still the same besides the bottle substituting for the breast.I will let my wife know about the no bottle in bed.Thank you for your concern.

If the feeding procedures are pretty much the same, it might have to do with the fact that he's missing the closeness and warmth of your wife's body, or it might just be a phase he's going through.

He's a "terrible two." Do you notice that he gets angry and screams in frustration during the day when he doesn't want to do something or if things aren't going his way?

How many times a night did your wife have to nurse him before she started him on the bottle? Is he totally weaned to the bottle, or does she still nurse him at times? Why did he get switched to a bottle? Why not a cup exclusively?

Does he get a snack before bed, so that his stomach is full and he would be more inclined to sleep through the night?

Why is your son still in his parents' bed? Why not his own?

Is he an only child? I know with our second it was a big issue with her waking up and thinking she was alone. They can get like this when they fall asleep with company. In our case it made a huge difference having our other daughter go to bed at the same time as her so she was aware there was someone else in the room with her. Also, at that age especially, it's best for them to fall asleep on their own rather than being rocked or fed to sleep. Kids are a puzzle and there is rarely one super answer that solves everything.
