A movie I think came out in the 90's. The kid gets beat up and embarrassed. Goes to learn kung fu with shaolin monks. Comes back and beats them all at martial arts tournament.

All I can think of is The Karate Kid made in the 1980's

Actually that sounds like the description to just about 90% of the martial arts movies out there. However, as someone who was obsessed with martial arts movies in the 90s, I'm surprisingly drawing a blank on this one...
