550 w generator has fuel leaking through air filter

You don't mention generator brand/model, but this can be a symptom of a carburetor float sticking and not shutting off fuel flow when the fuel bowl fills. A sharp light rap with a firm object to the side of the fuel bowl will sometimes jar the float loose.
