    math elimination problem
    5x-8y = 25
    -x+4y = -7

    This is what I did:

    5x-8y =25
    -2x+8y = -14
    _____________

    x = 11/3??

    Is this right? What are the next steps and how would you write this? :confused:

    yes 11/3 is correct for x value. Now you must sub this value into one of the equations to get the y value.

    Ok, thanks. But now if I plug into the first equation it looks like this:

    5(11/3) - 8y = 25

    What do I do now?

    Just solve for y in that new equation the same way you solved for x before.

    Not exactly the same. Capuchin was correct by saying just multiply out the brackets and solve. Post your answer and we'll tell you if its right

    I got -10/12? Is the answer 11/3, -10/12

    Yes but remember that -10/12 reduces to -5/6

    Good Job!

    You should post your question under your own new thread. Your question has nothing to do with elimination, and the thread is also a year and a half old.

    2x-3y=-11
    3x+4y=16

    Sigh COOLIOZ, have you read the previous posts? Especially that of morgaine?

    DANNYSENDIN, your answer is wrong. X = 4/17.

    Yeah, thanks folks for wasting my time reading through this entire thread yet again.

    Sigh.

    and substitute 11 in equation (1)

    5x-8y=25
    5(11)-8y=25
    -8y=25-55
    -8y=-30
    -8
    y = 3.75
