Follow my dream, or stick to the safe route?
My entire life I have felt I should be in entertainment somehow. I am currently a writing major in college, and aspire to write a book, movies, or even for a fashion magazine. However, my dream has always been to act. I finally crossed trying out for a play in high school off my list, but haven't been involved since. I realize that a lot of others want to act, but I truly believe I can be great at it. I do realize, however, that its unrealistic, and especially with this economy it would be 'safer' to stick to writing. So what do I do? I am a freshman so there is time but, I just want to know if following a dream is worth the risk. Thanks

Why not pursue both? You can continue with your studies while getting involved with the theater department at your college, or a local playhouse in your community. Do a bit of research and find out what is available within a reasonable distance from you. Look into acting classes. Think locally, if possible, then see how things go. You might eventually get involved with a theater group. Depending on where you live, you might look into auditions for local commercials. Anything to get your started and get your foot in the door. Often times, once you are involved, you will be able to do a bit of networking within some acting circles and learn about other opportunities that you wouldn't know about otherwise.

In time you will be able to determine if the acting is something you could really make a go of, or if you might just enjoy doing it on the side.

I'd keep trying at school but also speak with the instructor and find out what opportunities there may be in your area outside of school. Check for things online and in the phone book. If you have any local theater houses, go there and speak to them directly. Just be aware of any gimmick or scam type operation. Get references, check better business bureau, etc.
