Where abouts are you from? Laws and definitions are different in some countries. In the UK, your situation would only be illegal if you were having a sexual relationship.

In all places that I have looked up, dating is not illegal. However, in many places sexual contact (going beyond hand holding and light kissing) can be.

Just because 'dating' is not against the law does not mean that there aren't other laws that might apply or affect your relationship such as local curfews. Also, if you parents are against you dating him and you continue, then they could bring charges along the lines of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and/or interfering with custodial rights.

Are your parents okay with you dating a 17 year old? If not, then do not go behind their backs. Breaking your parents trust would end up being worse than almost anything else you can do.

What do your parents say to kissing an older guy? He could get into a lot of trouble kissing you if someone thinks it's a make out session.
