The weight of the mulch is needed to do this calculation, such as how many pounds per one cubic foot.

There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard.

To illustrate, assume that one cubic foot of fresh mulch weighs about 1 pound per cubic foot, 1 x 27 = the full yard weighs 27 pounds.

One ton equals 2000 pounds divide by 27 pounds per yard = 74 yards should weigh one ton.

This probably was the long method, there may be other methods, but the key is knowing what one unit of material weighs, then convert to volume, then back to weight.

Make a box 12" x 12" x 12", fill it with the product and weigh it to be more accurate.

I have a hunch you are ordering mulch and they sell by weight and you have made plans in yards. If so, just ask the supplier how much a yard weighs or how many yards in a ton.
