Your bigger question should be whyit came off after 8 years. Check both ends of the spring to make sure part of the attaching loop has not broken off. If both ends are not the same you may need a new spring.
Spring seems to be OK.Yes,I am curious as to why it came off, just prior to finding it .I know one load was uneven and washer was dancing. But I really want to put it back together.I have reordered the $5.10 spring, But need to figure out how to put back.Any ideas/
When you get the new spring there may be directions along with it. Your supplier may be able to get a repair manual for you. I can't help with the exact positioning of the spring because the brands vary a great deal. There should be more than one spring. They are usually in pars or in threes. Inspect the unit for the other springs. If you have only two they will be in exact opposition to each other. If you find one of three missing their attachment should form a perfect triangle. Attach the spring into the holes that look identical to the other springs.
This might be a counter balance spring that hook to the Left rear of the machine. The short end hook to the bracket at the tub and long end is to the rear of the cabinet at the very bottom. You will see the hole and probably see some grease.
