I live in California and I have been divorced for about 8yrs. My 15yr. Old daughter for the past 2yrs. Has been living with her father. She refuses to have anything to do with me and has told me to get out of her life. I have tried to be in her life and talk about our problems, but it doesn't matter. We have gone to mediations, counseling and still no change. Her father doesn't care and says it is between me and her and he is staying out of it. Now after so much time and so many words, I have given up. I am tired and I am at the point where now I want to give up my parental rights to my ex. I would like to know on how to go about this and what paper work is needed to begin the process.

What do you think you would be giving up? If you don't want to be a part of your daughter's life, then just stop. There is no reason to sign anything. Just don't visit, don't call, don't contact.

So? Giving up your parental rights does not relieve you of your parental responsibility. There are umpteen threads here that deal with the same issue and the answer is always the same. Parental rights and parental obligations are two different things. Giving up your rights does not relieve you of your obligations. If there is court ordered child support, that would not be affected by a relinquishment of your rights.

Yes, I don't understand why people believe giving up a right, gets rid of an obligation, visitation, custody are not related at all to child support, they are two different issues, one can not stop paying child support because they don't get visitation and one is not suppose to stop allowing visitation if the other party does not pay child support,

Giving up rights, only does that, you have no say at all, no right to visit.

You can not give up your obligation to pay child support, not unless your ex is remarried and the step parent wants to adopt.

Hey California I am going through the same thing you are except I am the mother and the father fills there head with so much bull crap... so I too am looking to give my parental rights up... let me know what paper work to get so I may go through the same process...

No they don't understand, these are people who don't want to pay the money for their children, If it was that easy the jails would not be full of people who did not pay their support.

Yes, you are right of course. If it worked that way then there would be a line a mile long at the courthouse.
