I know this is probably a dumb question but me and my friends sometimes take ectasy when we go out to partys.One of my friends has started taking it a lot more so I was just wondering if it is addictive.I talked to her and she said she just likes taking it and I don't have a problem with it so was just wondering.

Ecstasy is not physically addictive, meaning your body does not crave any chemicals in ecstasy the way it craves nicotine, caffeine, etc.

However, ecstasy has proven itself to be massively mentally addictive. It causes a euphoric state by manipulating your brain to release certain "happy" chemicals, and in its absence your brain will only crave that euphoric (happy) state-which is the withdrawal.

When I was in high school, we heard so many stories about parties in Denver where people died of an overdose on ecstasy. What happens is a person high on ecstasy craves so much water that they drown themselves. Their brains over-swell because they were so dehydrated (an effect of the drug) that they drank too much water. They can also suffer from high blood pressure, seizures, unconsciousness, drastic rises in body temperature, and heart failures. ECSTASY IS FATAL. That means that you can die from taking it.

I suggest that you and your friend end this dangerous habit immediately. I'm sorry to have to bring this up but now I have every reason to believe that your mum ought to be invading your privacy a whole lot more. I believe drugs should be legal for anybody and everybody, EXCEPT children. When minds and brains are just growing, they don't need outside interference, and drugs DO interfere.

Ecstasy is, or should be, MDMA*. Unfortunately, Ecstasy is notoriously impure. Tablets may contain other substances, such as ephedrine (a stimulant); dextromethorphan (DXM, a cough suppressant); ketamine (an anesthetic used mostly by veterinarians); caffeine; cocaine; and methamphetamine.

Pharmaceutical grade MDMA has addictive potential and has been found to be relatively benign physically. But SA above did a good job of describing that.

As to your friend taking more of the drug is probably explained by enhanced enjoyment of the results. That can lead to dependence in varying degrees. It can also result from developing physiologic tolerance. Neither of these necessarily represents addiction, but could lead to same in some individuals. Of course that's true for a wide range of substances and activities alike.

The main danger is not knowing what you are taking. Homemade concoctions including black-market manufacturers are providing unregulated products that lack standards. A little too much of this, or that, an added pinch of something else and you have a recipe for disaster. So please don't think of Ecstasy as you would a standarized pharmaceutical. It is not.

I don't think you can not know you are addicted you might tell yourself you are not addicted. Denial is very powerful.

10 years ago I would probably take 3 pills a day the first two would get me to a normal human being status the third would get the Roll on. After a while I had to take more and more to actually roll. Then after awhile I realized how much money I was spending so I stopped it was hard the first week or so but after that I just didn't care to take them anymore. But I really don't think you can not know you are addicted to something you just might deny it.


On a strange note as I was typing this my brain just said LETS FIND ONE FOR OLD TIME SAKE. But it went away really quick once I told myself you don't do that anymore.

That is an invitation to dispute, but I would say no you cannot be addicted and not know it. On the other hand it is not uncommon to be addicted and not admit it. That is frequently misinterpreted as denial.

A mental addiction means that your mind and emotions get so used to the mood that ecstasy puts you in (happy, heightened senses), that you don't feel "normal" unless you're high on the drug.

Mental addictions are very serious, and much easier to deny than a physical addiction. DrBill also points out the ecstasy can be cut with dangerous addictive chemicals or made by careless amateurs who can make it even more poisonous than it already is.

Another worry is the "homemade" substitutes. God only knows what some half wit backyard chemist will put together to try and get a similar affect.
And as long as they can sell it , they don't care if it kills or cripples as long as the money comes in.

I don't think you can get it from a pharmacy.

Any drug has the potential of being addictive to the right person in the right mindset. Not all addictions are physical or chemical in nature.

Think about it... there are people with FOOD addictions. Then there are people with computer game addictions...
