    What kind of wood ? You should have a perfectly clean smooth sub floor to work with.

    What and of tiles are you talking about? If you are putting down the vinyl squares with adhesive on the back then the answer is yes. If you are talking about ceramic or some other stone, then I would strongly advise putting down some sort of backer board.

    It would definitely help if you could tell us what application we are talking about here?

    What kind of tile? What kind of subfloor? Are you asking about setting 10 tiles or 150 tiles?
