I have a root canal perforation on my upper left first molar. This was caused by the dentist drilling an extra canal. No of the tools broke in the canals. I have 2 uestions:

The endodontic specialist has said it can be repaired at a cost of £895.00. This includes: preparation of access, location of all canal anatomy with perforation repair, root canal therapy and placement of bonded core restoration." He has explained that he has a high success rate but obviously there are no guarantees. Can anyone tell me anything about this treatment - does it work? Also, does the price seem fair - it's a huge amount of money for me but I really don't want to loose the tooth as I'm on 32.

You may want to explore the option of having that tooth out and bridge made of the other teeth. If he can't guarantee the procedure, then I don't think you have any other option then figuring out how to get around and keep and assist what you have got. Bridges work well, nothing shows, and the tooth in between looks natural.

The only reason I don't have any input into this procedure is that I don't know anyone who would have it done when there are other alternatives; and I have worked with endodontists in the past. I can say though this is a very invasive procedure.

I have to ask though, why was the other dentist trying to drill another canal ?

Thanks for your response it's helpful. I should have been clearer - my own dentist wasn't trying to drill another canal, it was a mistake - I guess the drill must have slipped or something.

Yes, this does happen, and you are lucky that it turned out whereby everyone realized what had happened. It has happened at times though that the specialist hasn't noticed that a perforation has happened and caused a lot of pain and expense.

You have to realize any infection in the mouth, gone unnoticed and growing can infect other parts of the body.

I've seen perforations but can't recall any dentist saying he could repair it. Most have the tooth removed and an implant placed.

I don't know about implants; I go for bridges. I have had my bridges for going on 30 odd years now, with regular maintenance and cleanings of course.

There is a very expensive perforation repair compound. If I find the link will post it.

I believe the OP is in the UK; probably a little bit more expensive for this type of work then here.

Implant vs. bridge is a personal choice. I also have a bridge that has been in my mouth for over 30 years now. My husband has had 2 implants done and they are great, just normal brushing and flossing to maintain them, no floss threaders (that are rarely used by most) needed.
