Hello this is Teresa again.
With regards to my audit from the IRS after my marriage was dissolved and now with penalties and interest the bill is almost at 10K.
My attorney sent my ex-spouse a letter saying that we are willing to negotiate the balance and to contact us. Well the ex did contact my attorney and said he would call him back and never has. My ex-spouse was very abusive and an alcoholic in our marriage and I want to put this behind me.
The taxes were filed by us and no tax accountant was used as that would interfere with the amount of monies that the ex could use to buy his beer and spend time at the bar and his extra martial affairs. Please understand I am not bitter toward him anymore. He was what he was and nothing I can do can change that. But, I can try and do something about the IRS problem.
I only work 36 hours a week and own only my car. My attorney suggested that I allow the IRS to run their course of action and that eventually my ex's home will be put on a forced foreclosure, and that both of our wages will be garnished. I do not want my credit rating which I am trying to re-build go back into the toilet so to speak.
What can I do? I have asked for a liability split with the IRS and was denied. Now what would anyone recommend?
I need a Enrolled Agent in the Minneapolis, MN area but have yet to find one. I need guidance.
