As of right now when D-man is in his crate it's a toy or 2 & that's it. I have noticed when I come home he heads right for his water dish & drinks like a camel. Should we leave him w/ some water inside the crate or will that promote accidents.

Leave well enough alone. Maybe even divide off the crate to leave him less room for activity. The more activity, the thirstier he will be. They don't need much more than enough room for a good stretch now and then. I have never left food or water in the crate. But then I seldom have to leave a puppy more than a half day.
