    Is your friend sexually active?

Tell your friend she should see a doctor about this. 3 weeks of bleeding is definitely not normal and depending on the circumstances she needs medical attention.

My advice that she see a doctor still stands. She needs to get to the bottom of what is causing this irregular bleeding, especially if it's gone on for three weeks.

I can't give a diagnosis, I am not a medical professional for one and for another if I were I would have to examine your friend.

Prolonged bleeding is usually a red flag for ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages, which is why I asked if she was sexually active. There's no way for me or anyone on this site to know for sure what's going on.

I'll second Southamerica's advice. A doctor is the only one that can tell your friend what's going on. No one, not even a doctor, can give an accurate diagnosis over the internet.

It's up to your friend. This is her health she's risking. I can tell you one thing, she won't find answers on the internet. The only one that can help her is a doctor.
