Our esteemed Atty General announced yesterday that he would not be holding trials for Gitmo detainees in NY after all. 'Bout time... but it wasn't like he had a choice really.

What I find amazing is the complete lack of principle displayed by Holder. You know this policy is eating away at him. I'm surprised he did not resign.

His gripe against Congress is hilarious . You know if he opposes them they did something right.
Of course what he fails to say is that the restriction he's complaining about came about during Madame Mimi's reign(oh yeah... and the President signed them into law).

Anyway ;anything you need to know about Holder can be found in the Justice Dept. lawsuit on behalf of Safoorah Khan.

A guy I worked with was a guard for a couple years at GITMO, (he was reactivated after 9/11 along with many others), before he retired from the Military and from my employer.

The crap you hear about how poorly treated they were is pure BS. Alligators in an aligator farm are better behaved and more civil than most of the GITMO prisoners are.

They aren't parking violators. Spys were not treated as well during WW2 and that scum is. THey should be glad they are getting Geniva Convention protections... Technically they aren't entitled to them.

If they don't like it... shoot them in a leg... and dump them in shark infested waters. Its more than any of them deserve.

THey should be glad they MIGHT have a chance to see their families again. Personally they should all be shot if they aren't happy with their situation. It's their actions that put them their.

If I was in charge... the trouble makers would be eaten by sharks after "escaping". That wouldn't be too hard to arrange in that region. No body to dispose of is a plus. Hard to be a Martyr in a sharks intestines.

Or better... as a "Deadwood" disposal... feed them to hungry hogs.

We hardly ever agree, but this time I do. As a person of the military I have certain ''rules'' to abide by while in capture. At NO point is laying down, acceptable. Does this mean that if I didn't have these ''rules'' then I would lay down and admit defeat? Hell no! Every second, of every minute, of every hour, I would let them know I was there. Force them to shoot me in the leg and throw me in shark invested waters (maybe I could escape on the way to the shark water)...

It is hard to accurately judge the actions of someone (POW or not) without putting yourself into their position. Do you blame the prisoners for acting the way they do? I think not. You can't. Impossible. They may have made their bed but their not laying in it until they are dead! That's my thought on GITMO prisoners. Put yousef there and you'd act the same way.

I agree .Given that ,it adds weight to the outstanding treatment the GITMO detainees have been given.

There are many prisons stateside where conditions are much worse.

But this is about 'trials' . These detainees are unlawful enemy combattants and never did deserve civilian trials . The tribunal system they will get is more than fair.

Like I said... they are responsible for their situation. Persoanlly they should never have been granted Geneva convention protections, they don't qualify. They aren't members of a regular army acting on behalf of any nation.

They aren't going anyplace... so if they want to make it as hard on themselves as they can... thats their own choice. They aren't entitled to do the things they are doing.

Where you hit your nail, is YOUR belief that you can parse the word "fair". That's just not a word that CAN be parsed. To me, a trial is fair, or it isn't. There AIN'T no in between. There is NO other way to look at it, unless you wear right wing blinders. Therefore, your suggestion above CAN'T be true on its face.

I agree with Joe. Our system doesn't specify that everyone is entitled to a civilian trial. PFC Mattingly isn't going to get one.

What you are saying is you don't believe that military tribunals are fair .I dispute that both under the current situation and historically.

I already addressed the 'fairness' of any Obama show trial in NY in the OP. They already said the trial outcome didn't matter, these guys weren't going anywhere win or lose. Is that the American way?

I can TELL you EXACTLY how it is, and I've not been there.

I don't know if you can compartmentalize a torture regimen, from a prisoner regimen. The military did. I want you to THINK about that for a minute. Not having been in the military or prison, it may be a hard concept to grasp. But, I PROMISE you, that in between the times they were being tortured, they were treated VERY WELL. Since torture ended, they are being treated VERY WELL. I don't know of any newspaper that says different.

I'm not complaining about their physical treatment. I'm complaining about their LEGAL treatment.

Hard concept to grasp?. I had MORE to do with the execution of the first gulf war than 75% of the Armed forces did (many had no involvement at all,) The people that had boots on the ground over there had more. And saw more than most who were not in command did. I was there for the ENTIRE thing before Desert Shield and through the entire desert storm operation... and I was doing it from a Military base. I knew what the Ground Commanders were told to do before they even knew it.

I don't equate that with being shot at... but if you define being shot as as integral... most of command would be disqualified as well.

As far as being in prison... you are right.. I haven't been there. You don't get there unless you did something wrong, get caught and get convicted.

Its not a country club... and was never meant to be. But fling feces at guards like Monkeys do in the Monkey house... expect to suffer their wrath.

Saying GITMO detainees are covered by the Geneva Convention is twisting the meaning of that accord beyond the breaking point.

And again... exactly what laws give Terrorists legal rights superiour to POW'S or Citizens? We have every legal right to detain them for however long it takes.

Hey... the LEFT begged to classify them as POW's. POW's don't get repatriated until the end of hostilities... under international accords.

Last I checked... Terrorists haven't laid down their arms yet.
