I have an adopted daughter, how can I legaly sign her back over to the state?
My adopted 17 yer old daughter has become abusive, on drugs and alcohol, and has been more than my family can handle anymore. She recently took off and texted that she will return on Monday. She has a history of mental problems that have become too much for my family. How can I sign custody back over to the state for her? While we love her very much, she needs more help than we can give her.

    Hello a:

Children don't come with a return policy.

Yes, you don't and can not "return" her, adoption makes her your child legally just like you had given birth to her.

So get her the help she needs, if she needs it. You are having to deal with a troubled teen, so deal.

If you have to search for drugs and call the police, do so.
If you think taking away all the luxuries you pay for (cell phone, etc) will help her realize that there is an exchange required, do so. It's a bit past the point of thinking that the phone helps you know where she is.
You might want to research your state laws regarding when the police will look for a missing 17 year old, what damage limits parents are responsible for, and so on. If you can't find it online, the police should know, or a school counselor.

Been dealing with eh troubled teen. She is refusing treatement and is now physically abuse toward me. I would love to get her help. She refuses! I will not be physically assaulted by anyone no matter how much I love them.

    Hello again, a:

Do you think your situation is different than any other parent?? THEY have to deal with their children. SO DO YOU!

If she assaults you, call the COPS! That will most likely force her into treatment.

Kids don't come with a refund policy. Maybe get yourself into some counseling to help you deal with her problems.

I note the use of the word "adopted" in the question. That speaks volumes to me.

Agreed - kids don't come with a money back guarantee. Another parent who raised a child and now can't handle that same child. Sad all the way around.
