We all fully stopped to make a left turn but the person in front of me put his car in reverse and slam into mine. There are no witnesses. When the police arrives, the person in front of me claims I rear ended him. Then the police issues me a ticket. The police said that he is based on the skid mark. Because the darker skid mark is far from his car, i.e. the lighter skid mark is near his car, I use the brake and hit his car. But the fact is absolutely not like that. I am quite sure that he drove back and hit my car. Anybody can explain why the skid mark shows like that?

If he backed into you, he may not even have a skid mark, the impact would have stopped him,
Most police have no real training at accident investigation, the normal patrol officer may have 4 or 8 hours max at learning to investigate accidents. Too late now, unless you took a lot of great photos of everything, then you would have to hire an accident investigator to review and testify in court about it

You're not as clear as you think you are. So you are saying that the other car left a "lighter" mark and your car left the "darker" mark? As ballengerb1 asked, was this mark from your tire (Was there a skid mark from more than one of your tires, by the way?) in front of your tire (which would be consistent with your car being pushed back from the impact), or in back of your tire (consistent with your car being in motion before the impact)?

I would to clarify somethings:

- The skid mark is from my car.

- I can not say the skid mark is in front of your tire or behind it because the car was moved out of the scene.

- There are two skid marks (for both front tires). Both of them reflect that the darker is far from the front car.

I'm a liability investigator - you are "quite sure" the other vehicle backed up. If the other vehicle backed into you, you would KNOW that it did.

At any rate, the Police are after the fact witnesses. They didn't see the accident. Tires have to spin while stopped in position in order to leave skid marks. You were directly behind him and he was able to back up so fast that he left skid marks? I would venture a guess that your car left the skid marks because you were moving, slammed on the brakes, skidded. I can't imagine a scenario with one car immediately behind the other, the first car backing up suddenly and leaving skid marks, not when the cars are at proximity.

Sorry, I'm sure this is not what you want to hear and, of course, I haven't seen the cars or the scene but based on what you've posted, that's my thought.

You have written about "dark" and "light" skid marks several times. I am not an expert on skid marks, but at any rate have been ignoring that issue in this thread because, for one thing, I don't quite understand what you are saying. Black rubber tires, as far as I know, leave black skid marks, not white, or any other color. Do you mean the Intensity of the mark varied?

And I'll say "it" again - you are "pretty sure" he backed into you? That would solve the mystery of the accident for me.

At any rate - again - you would have me believe that you were stopped behind him and he backed up so suddenly and quickly that he pushed your car backwards and your car left skid marks?

I never say never but I've been investigating accidents for a very long time and this is totally outside my experience.

Why would you lie? Why does anyone lie? Half the time people think they are being truthful but, in fact, have convinced themselves that they were not at fault and thus the "story.

What do the insurance companies say about the accident? The impact to the vehicles should show whether the front end of your car dipped down (indicating a sudden stop) or not.
