Question #1 Debt Validation: Who do I write first?
    Hi,

I am about to begin the Debt Validation / Verification process, but I'm not sure where to start with the letter wrting process. Do I write the Credit Bureaus, Collection agencies, or the companies who initially furnished the debt?

Write each of the 3 credit bureaus a very brief letter that says: Please verify this account. Then, list the creditor and the account number. The credit bureaus contact the creditors, who have 30 days to validate the debt. If they do not respond, the credit bureau HAS to remove the debt. This has worked for me. Also, be sure to certify (with return receipt) all correspondence with the credit bureaus (don't forget to make copies of all your letters). It costs just under $5.00 per letter at the post office, but well worth it.

I'm beginning the process now. How long did the process take for you?

Actually, I just completed the process and the first letter I wrote was December 13, 2006, so it didn't take long at all. The process was not as hard as I'd imagined. I wrote the letters to the credit bureaus and then I waited. It took them less than 30 days to respond with those items that had been deleted, and they also sent me updated credit reports. Since December 13, I've had two judgments removed (one of which wasn't supposed to come off until March, but I guess they figured that since I was so diligent with writing letters, they would just be receiving another letter in a couple of weeks anyway), an outdated account that was paid years ago was removed, a credit card bill that was never paid was removed, and two items that were verified. Today, I will call the two that were verified and tell them that they will be paid in full, by the end of next week, if they send me a deletion letter stating that they will remove those items from my credit report. After that, my credit report will only have positive accounts! If they choose not to, that's fine. One of them comes off in August and one comes off in April of next year. I'll wait them out.
