I replaced the gasket on the oil valve cover, it had been leaking oil onto the spark plugs. Now I believe I have a vacuum leak. Is using started fluid a reasonable method for finding the leak(s).

Off and on for a year now the engine has been revving very high when I have my foot on the clutch but the gear is still in place. If I put the truck in neutral (when waiting for a light or coasting) the engine goes down to its normal idle, (which at this point is not so awesome either). If the gear is engaged the revving is a non issue as the motor has a load. What am I looking at?

Has my ambition destroyed my truck? Is it time to start sitting on my hands? I've got too much free time to feel good about sending my baby to the shop...

Starter fluid is way too explosive to use to find vacuum leaks. Instead, use a can of spray brake cleaner or, preferably, propane. Remove the head from a propane torch and attach a length of tubing.

Look into how to set the idle speed, when the truck is at normal operating temperature--likely 700 rpm. You may want to clean the throttle plate, throttle body, and Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). It should be similar to the process described below:
