W-2: Box 16 is greater than Box 1
    Hello,

I worked in two states (same employer) in 2010. While Box 16 of my W-2 breaks out the incomes for each state, the total of those states is considerably higher (approx 8K) than the income in Box 1. I did receive a moving allowance/reimbursement (approx 6k) which I had to pay back as I did not stay in the job the required two years after moving.

    Does my W-2 sound correct?

It is not unusual for the income reported to the state to be higher than the income reported to the feds. Some states don't recognize employee contributions to a 401(k) plan or health care savings account as being "pre-tax." As to whether this would account for an $8K difference I can't say. You could ask your payroll department about it. Or check some of the pay stubs you received during the year - if they show year-to-date state wages and federal wages you can see whether the difference is consistent with $8K for the full year.
