I have torn out the old fiberglass shower pan and am ready to install the new one. I put a new drain assembly that connects to the shower pan and got that installed no problem. When I put the drain assembly over the 2" ABS drain line it fits over the rubber gasket in the shower drain assmebly. The problem is that the drain pipe is about to 2" to short to reach the top of the gasket. I tried tightening the gasket to the pipe but if you lift the pan at all it lifts right off the pipe. How do I cut out the old verticle piece of ABS that connects to the elbow. I have no access from the baement.

Are you sure that fitting is an elbow, or is it a PTRAP? Here, a ptrap has water standing in it at all times (unless it has dried out). How far from the PTRAP (or elbow) to the top of the pipe?

If there is room, you could use an INSIDE PIPE CUTTER (see image) to cut the pipe down to just above the PTRAP (or elbow)... leave 1" pipe above elbow, minimum...and then prime/cement a 2" coupling and a longer piece of pipe in place.

If there isn't enough height then you may be able to use an inside pipe reamer to remove the pipe from the ptrap, or you'll need to open the floor and install a new ptrap.

Finally, be sure to check the shower pan manufacturer's installation instructions to see if they require the new shower pan to be set ina bedding sustrate... very important to best job in the long run... ;)
