    Do you know how to convert minutes (as in 39 degrees, 48 minutes) into degrees so you can find the tan?

    Just divide 48 minutes by 60.
    So: 48 divided by 60 is equal to 0.8, which means that it's 48 minutes is 0.8 hours.
    So 39 degrees 48 minutes is equal to 39.8 degrees. (You replaced 48 by 0.8, making it 39.8 degrees).
    And then, you can find tan 39.8 degrees using your calculator :D
