Tried to start 1989 Toyota Camry and smoke came out of vent on dashboard and now the car cranks real strong but won't start.
If not a Pinched or exposed wire, Check Ignition switch and fuses/Fusable Links.
Does the starter sound like it's free spinning now? Like much, much faster than it ever has?
I'm thinking a backfire, then smoke from that ingested into the cowl vents and out the dash vents.
This would suggest the timing belt let go while trying to start.
A dash electrical short would give off a very strong distinct smell inside the car. Even some time after.
