I'm trying to remove old bathtub spout that needs replaced, but I'm having problems.
Because the spout has a cutout on the bottom, I assumed it was a slip-off spout with a set screw, but I can't seem to find the set screw.
I've tried lying under, taking pictures, feeling around with allen wrench... but to no avail-can only feel the pipe (which I believe is copper)I can see a white spot, but it feels like its just buildup on the pipe-no screw.
I'm wondering, would it possible that this spout was some sort of universal spout and there is in fact no set screw but instead it just twists off?
I tried twisting, without too much pressure, but it doesn't seem to want to budge.
I'm attaching pictures from the cutout if that helps any.

Twist harder, the spouts thread on.

Try to turn it counter clockwise until the cutout come up then you be able to see the set screw if there is any if it is hard to turn use a screw driver for leverage it will help, if there is no screw then try to turn it conter clockwise until the spout comes loose, good luck.

Hooray! I've only been working on that silly spout for a week! I was turning it clockwise for some reason (I know better)

Also-I saw in another email to spray WD40.. I did that beforehand and used the screwdriver like you suggested and it was a cinch!

Now for installing the new one... :)

When you install a new one if it is slip type before you install it, make sure you lubricate the O ring on the spout and check the end of the pipe for any sharp edge if there is any use a file or emery cloth and clean, if it threaded type use some Teflon tape, good luck

I have a similar question..
I see a cut out underneath my tub spout , so I went to home depot to buy a new one... got the new one out, shut off water and used the allen wrench they give u , but to no avail did I find a screw.. I couldn't even fathom laying on the floor of tube to see in there... I have long nails, so its not that easy... but on the new one , the screw isn't terribly hard to find.. ( maybe because its in my hand and not facing downward)... I am afraid to twist it or use a screw driver in it and twist, I don't want o break the pipe... what would be the purpose of having a twist tub spout with a cut out... helppppppppppp, its dripping so much, and I am probably spending too much monthly on my water bill because of this... also, if mine is a threaded twist off... can I use the one I bought with a set screw... or need to return it for another threaded twist off...

The dripping isn't the spout, it is the washers on the faucet stems or the cartridge. Leave the spout alone and work on the washers. They may be the old style screw on or cartridge. 1 handle or 2.

OK, now I am totally lost... so it has nothing to do with tub spout... its the handle... now I have no clue what to do... my faucet is like the dial one... I took a picture of it but I don't know how to attach the picture here... its a huge plaque attached to the tile... the handle maybe comes off separately... not sure... I am pretty good with things and do a lot of my own repairs... This is just befuddling to me...

If the tub/shower valve is leaking you'll need to shut off the water supply, remove the handle and trim plate and then access the inner cartridge with washers and O-rings to repair this.

Depending on the age of the tub/shower valve you may be able to make a simple repair or you may need to replace the entire cartridge/washers/o-rings, etc.

If you have no clue on this then you may want to enlist the help of someone that has some experience with this as you can get yourself into some pretty deep trouble if you make any mistakes, OK?

Oh geez... I do see a screw on the outer portion... and I see on the handle lever the little red/blue button which you pop out to access the removal of the handle. So basically its O rings that wear out over the years.. but definitely sure its not the tub spout and a possible O ring in there? I feel that the water dripping out of spout is HOT... just saying... attached pic of handle... I can't afford to hire someone , so I must do it myself... I can do it... The thing is I must remove it and see what I need before I go to home depot...

Exactly, remove the handle, shut the water off and gain access to the inside of the valve (cartridge/washers/o-rings). Once you get the parts out you take them over to home depot and if that fails, you take the parts over to a plumbing supply store and see what they can do to help, OK?
