How you remove some of the shine from an oak dresser (stained dark walnut) without removing most of the stain and leaving streaks?

The shine might be from either a poly top coat or a stained poly coating, so it's difficult to say.
Put some paint thinner or turpentine on a rag and try a small hidden spot.
Oak soaks up stain and there is little danger of removing it.
