Wondering if anyone can tell me the name of an animated film I'm trying to find...

I remember watching it a couple of times when I was about 10. I seem to remember the animation was set in space on a few different planets, one of which was very lush like an alien like jungle where I think the main character who was a young boy, befriends a strange creature. I remember the creature having four big stumpy legs and a human like forebody with arms, neck and a simple looking face.

In the animation, whilst amongst the jungle/trees the creature and the boy are pickibg large fruits when a strange black tar like monster attacks and engulfs the boys creature friend.

There is also a scene where the boy is accompanied by other characters on a planet where the surroundings are mainly water, covered in gigantic lily like plants, above which an aerial battle then takes place between aircraft which I remember these resembling insects.

I really hope someone knows what I'm talking about because its been bugging me for too long now!
