I have an old Ideal Standard Kingston toilet circa 1962 dual siphonic. Toilet will not flush when handle pressed down, water stays in cistern. The toilet was flushing perfectly then for no obvious reason stopped flushing. When I throw a bucket of water into pan it does not flush normally. Water goes down slowly in a swirling fashion. Would a slight blockage in the pan affect the flushing mechanism?

How old is the toilet... new or old?

Sounds like 2 issues to me. Here, a slight blockage would not affect the flushing mechanism.

Try a CLOSET AUGER on the toilet bowl... see if that allows the toilet to flush when you use the bucket of water.

If you have an older siphonic toilet then you will need to go to a local plumbing supply house and see if they can run down a parts list/maunfacturer for you.

As Mark suggested, a closet auger may be the answer to your problem. However, a toilet from 1962? Even the piping below the toilet may be partially clogged. Try the closet auger first, and if that doesn't fix the problem, pull the toilet and snake the drain with a larger auger.

One last thought, with a toilet that old, it may be time to think about updating the toilet with a newer water saving model.

Thank you Mark — unfortunately if I change the toilet it will mean the wash hand basin and bath will have to be changed too. The colour is misty grey! I have a brochure which I got from Ideal Standard with a cut out drawing of the cistern and I seem to be missing a washer mounted above the diaphragm in the plunger system. Once more will disassemble and fit the missing washer which I intend to make of an old car tube! Will let you know if it works. Thank you for your advice.
