My alma mater changed its name, what about my resume?
    Hey,

Has anyone ever experienced their college/university changing its official name after you graduated? I just graduated a year ago, and now it looks like my alma mater will have an entirely new name come fall of 2012.

I would be thrilled if they could just issue me an updated diploma, seeing as how it would then have the word "University" (oh la la!), but the general consensus among my friends is that they wouldn't do that. How would I explain to any employers in the future that my degree is legitimate if it has the name of a school that doesn't exist anymore?

I was way too hasty (even though I've been looking for this information for quite some time)... turns out an FAQ on my school's website states that alumni will be able to request updated degrees.

Imma be a University graduate... look out world!

I don't believe I can delete this question... but maybe it will help someone down the road... don't know how, but maybe!

I received my Master's Degree from a school that has had FOUR names in the past 35 years:

Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute took over New York University's engineering school in the 1970's and became "Polytechnic Institute of NY." Then in the mid-80's they changed the name to "Polytechnic University." Then a few years ago they re-established a relationship with NYU and changed their name to "Polytechnic Institute of New York University" or "NYU Poly" for short. With each change I have updated my resume to keep it current. I figure using the current name is less confusing, and if someone asks why my diploma has a different name I can easily explain it.

My University used to be called Lake Superior State University, now it's Davenport University. ;)

Wow, I went to Davenport back in the mid 80's and it was called Davenport then. Different location though, I'm sure.

Yup. The Midland Location used to be LSSU and then Davenport bought them not too long ago. A little different situation then the OP's but similar.
