[F]Can anyone help us? We have got an 11 week old Working Cocker Spaniel, we have had him since he was 8 weeks. Both my husband and I had 2 weeks off work to donate our time to looking after and training him, however we are no further forward. Each night he poos and urinates in his crate. You can leave him in his crate for a short time and he does it, he has absolutely no control. He appears to like his crate as he get in it very freely for a little nap. Last night my husband walked him outside and he came back in got in his crate and pooed. Today he has just come in from a walk got on his beanbag and urinated. I'm at my wits end and I don't want to feel like this about our new little chap, I have even just said to my husband I would get rid of his if it wasn't for our children. We have both had dogs before and know all about the routine side of things we were even getting up in the night, 3am to take him out, we highly praise him when he does things outside, we also use commands. I have read every book the library holds and they all state dogs should not foul their own beds. He has also been checked out by the vet who found this behaviour very strange and the only advice given was he will grow out of it, but in the meantime I feel like I'm trying to climb mount everest with this dog.

Thanks for that but I did that last night before posting my question. I have now just gone and ordered Bach Rescue Remedy to see if that helps, so here's hoping. Thanks for your reply anyway.

I hate to see you going to drugs, but maybe this is a case for it. I can only conclude the authors that firmly state dogs won't foul their bed, don't have that much experience. In fact, it is not that common, I think I have a lot of experience, but have hardly seen it. Interesting your vet never heard of it. It is possible Google brings a disproportional share of such problems here.

If you looked back through the old questions here, you will see nobody has a magic bullet to solve the problem. I think the problem is largely emotional, spite, which books also deny, or stress. At 8 weeks, your puppy should have adapted to the crate fairly quickly. Are you doing the things from the older questions, using a small crate or dividing off a larger one, using a rack or a grid, obedience training, and laying down in front of the crate when you put him in? I have had good luck with the grids, but they don't work as well on stools as urine. Somebody I respect here has recently warned of puppies injuring themselves on them too.

It almost sounds like he was trained to use his quarters to relieve himself before you got him, and is continuing it. I have seen the environment my puppies have before 7 weeks, and they are not forced to live in their filth. I don't have the problem. I have not seen the environment for yours and others' having trouble. Even better breeders may not give puppies the care mine get before I get them.

Thank for what you say and you have actually struck a cord I know for a fact the mother was taken away from sleeping with the pups at 6 weeks old to aid the weening process so the breeder said. However, I am aware that the puppies had paper in the area they sleep but with there being five pups I just think they fouled everywhere. The situation is very frustrating for us as we feel we have made no progress what so ever in 3 weeks but we shall just have to persevere and see how things go. Any other help invited. I will keep this updated to help others.
