Shower head leaks at the base of head, next to the pipe. Plumber says they have to replace the plumbing behind the wall

Can you describe the shower head a little more? Does it look like a short tub spout, by chance? Is there two pieces (shower arm or spout and a shower head)?

I've tried to attach a photo to this answer, but I can't seem to get it on. If you can send your email address, I can send the picture that way . There are two pieces. An arm (with small ball at the end)and the shower head that connects onto it, like a spout. There is a connector at the end of the arm, that the head screws into.

Does your shower arm look like my picture(s) below? Note here that your shower arm may still have the connector on it (that connects shower head)... the one in the pic(s). Below are missing the connector but the shower arm has the ball end you mentioned.

If this looks similar to your setup then you should be able to remove the head or even the shower arm that goes into the wall as the shower arm is threaded behind the wall. If they try to remove the shower arm and it breaks off then you may need to open the wall, but I'll tell you, even if the arm breaks off behind the wall we can usually salvage the fitting behind the wall and may still be able to fix without opening the wall.

Let me know more here... may be that you simply need to get another, more experienced plumber out to do the work... ;)

If you want to have the best shot at NOT having to break into the tile... call a plumber. With any luck he can just spin it out and install a new shower arm and shower head. Should be a cheap service call if you have the new shower arm and shower head waiting for him... ;)
