Is it a Check Engine Light? If so, attach a code reader to the data link connector, located under the dash.
Or it could also be for the Transmission Mode.
Look for a button (there may be more than one) usually on the shifter or console or it may be on the dash.
Let us know
It sounds like the check engine light... i have this car... my check engine light isn't working... i didn't even know where it was at i think u just helped me... jiffy told me it was on but the bulb is burned out...
European model. It's due for a timing belt. (turbo diesel)
Thanks for that could be t belt light
I've changed the tbelt any ideas for turning the light OFF?
Check your Owner's Manual.
Take it to advance auto or autozone (free of charge)have them run a diagnostic test they will give you the code that will explain why it is on... does the light flash at all or just stay steady?? The haynes toyota camry book explains everything about that light..
Don't know if they have those in Wicklow Ireland
Or any auto store that has a diagnostic system that can test it... or you may no someone that has a obd ii(on board diagnostic) scanner that you can plug in to your car to retrieve the code... or you can purchase one... the next time you are in your vehicle... watch that light... it will pause then flash a few times to give you a code... for example code 24 will flash two times pause and then flash four times...
You can try these Googled steps to reset the maintenance light:
1 Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
2 Press the trip meter reset button until "Trip A" is displayed.
3 Turn the ignition switch off.
4 Press and hold the trip meter reset button. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position without starting the engine.
5 Release the trip meter button after the display shows either "000000" or "COMPLETE."
This find doesn't specify which model years the reset procedure applies to, it only provides these steps.
That's for the 2002 and later camrys that have the maitainence required warning... thatz how you reset it... the 2001 and previous models didn't have it, just the check engine light...
In Europe, the vast majority of the Toyota's over there are diesel. Like the OP has.
They have a Timing belt maintenance light that has to be reset after each t-belt service. It is critical that this service be done every 60k or serious engine damage could result. Hence the light!
The reset procedure is much like CaptainRich's post. Even on 96's, but only on turbo diesels.
