Your 8 year old is an 8 year old. Nothing is 'wrong' with him/her, other than a parent who thinks something is wrong with him/her. Stop trying to find out what's WRONG with him/her, and focus on what is RIGHT about him/her. What CAN he/she do well.

All children develop a smart mouth and lazy additude. Some never grow out of it. But if you deal with this right, your child will grow up just fine.

Who is the parent? You or the 8 year old? I don't allow mine to be lazy OR have a smart mouth.

I think to correct question is "how did I allow my 8 year old to become so lazy and have such a smart mouth".

The answer to your question is lazy parenting. You've allowed this to happen.

It's hard being a good parent. It takes a lot of work, and sometimes a lot of headaches. If your child has become lazy and mouthy, it's because you're slacking. It's time to pick up the pace. It may seem easier to just let them do what they want, but sooner or later it does bite you in the butt. That seems to be what's happening here.

I also have an 8 year old. She wouldn't dare mouth back to me. No, I'm not a mean mother, nor do I believe in hitting. But, my daughter has respect for me, because that's what I demand. She also has chores, and they must be done every day. She doesn't have the opportunity to be lazy.

It's time to find a more effective way of parenting.
