Do they have to report to who ? Having a baby by anyone, minor or not is a confidentiality matter and has to be respected. Any reporting is a hipaa violation.

Edit: My statement that 'any reporting is a hipaa violation' isn't exactly what I meant. I meant to say, anyone not within the hospital administration has no business reporting.

Report what to who? No, we don't report minors having babies.

You don't send certificates of live birth to vital statistics?

We do that, but we do it for everyone, not just minors. Minors have babies every day.

Here's the thing that I think the OP is really asking:

If they are a minor hiding their pregnancy from their parents, is the hospital going to notify their parents about their child giving birth?

There is also another issue here. If the mother is under the age of consent there may be a child abuse or rape issue. The hospital might be required to report that. Just as they would report a child that keeps coming into the ER with bruises and wounds.

But I would think the OB/Gyn would be the one to report a pregnancy.

Also any question on law needs to include a general location as laws vary.

Agree Scott, the age and where the person is located will help with an answer
