I have a 9 year old Rottweiler and he is pooping in the house non-stop. It's not piles, but drips as he walks. There is also blood in it and it is the texture of snot. When he is outside, just drips of blood come out. I'm wondering what is causing this and debating whether its time to put him down. I don't want him to be suffering. He doesn't act like he is hurting, he has an appetite, plays outside. I'm dumbfounded and have no idea.

Gee, my elderly dad has had diarrhea, and I am not considering putting him down.
Granted I complain about vet costs these days (for my pets), and do as many home remedies as I can, but bloody stools dripping out seems past the home stage.

I have brought him to the vet and they said to change his diet. I have done that and still no change

Call up the vet let them know there's no change and ask what's the next step.

Continious bleeding is not good, I'm sure you know that, they may need to investigate further.

The longer the bleeding continues the worse the problem will be, for your dogs sake make the call.

How long has this been going on? How long ago did you change his food?

I think I would go for a second opinion if that is all they said.

Did they run any tests? Stool samples? X-rays? Blood-work?

I'll admit that nine is getting up there for a Rottie but unless he has any serious problems he should have a few more years.

Please call the vet or take him to an emergency clinic (if available). You need all the answers you can get from them to know what is best your pup.

You don't put down a 9 year old rot, that's like putting someone down just because they are nearing retirement age. Everyone has given you great advice other than your vet. I am not a vet but know your dog will not bleed because you are feeding him poor food. This could be colitus or many other things, all of which require tests. Sounds like a bad case of worms to me.

Mucus in the stool is the direct result of an over infestation of worms. He will have an appetite, maybe have energy... but uncontrollable bowel movements could be worms - Hookworms possibly. Hookworms and whipworms will cause blood in the stool along with mucus.

You should take him into the vet. Rotties live longer then 9 years..

Get his stool looked at...

Only a moronic, incompetent vet would suggest a diet change for a dog literally dripping blood.

There isn't much I can add here, but I would also recommend getting a second opinion from another vet! I can't imagine why a vet would suggest a diet change when he was leaking diarrhea and blood.
