Why do you think they confiscated it? It's most likely because the owner reported it as stolen. You've had it in your possession for 6 months. In my eyes that's the same as stealing.

Agree, if they don't charge you with actually stealing it, they may charge you with possession of stolen property, Some areas have other names for similar crimes.
