You might have noticed Christchurch New Zealand has been devistated for the second time in a year. We are watching it unfold live and as evening comes there are going to be a lot of people needing food and shelter. This earthquake wasn't as big as some but it has destroyed enough inferstructure to be very inconvient

I heard about this yesterday. Did not know the epicenter went right through the town . There are some old and historic structures there that were destroyed . My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kiwis.
Appears in the last couple years there have been inordinate earthquake activity on the western edge of the Pacific plate.
The Pacific plate and the Australian plate are very active unfortunately for New Zealand the subduction runs through the South Island, sort of the same problem as the San Andraes fault. New Zealand also has the unfortunate problem of sitting on a supervolcano, so they get a lot of serious earthquakesQuote:

There are people here raising money for New Zealand and sending help but perhaps you haven't heard of donor fatigue. The world has become weary of paying for someoneelse's disaster. New Zealand is a rich country, they can help themselves and so the great appeals haven't been made around the world and to be cynical there has been no great death toll to tug at the heart strings. People are more inclined to donate to the dead than the living.
I hope Christchurch survives, already there are stories of 65,000 people who have left for good. Can't blame them one disaster is enough, two is more than enough.
I finally heard a radio ad for
Christchurch relief . I don't think that it's donor fatigue . I think the press for some reason doesn't find it compelling narrative . I don't know why . From what I've seen ,the town was historic and beautiful .

Admins, how about giving this site an automatic spell checker similar to what Yahoo ! Answers has.
And who's idea of spelling should we adopt? Personally I'm fed up with spellcheckers that flag differences between English (Oxford) and American English (Websters) and with people who have nothing better to do than nitpick since in case you didn't know some of us have dyslexic fingers and a very different education. I'm surprised you haven't rushed in to correct some other obvious mistakes of recent date used by others hereQuote:

Let's face it Haiti is closer to home and offers better photo ops and isn't that what it is about for the press, the polies and the celebs. You see you can have a disaster in a third world country and everyone's heart bleeds for those poor people, but a disaster in a first world country, well they don't need your help do they?Quote:
