Can I claim exemption for my wife in 2010 returns?
    Hi,

I am a resident alien filing taxes in 2010. I got married in mid of 2010 and my wife lives in another country (never been to US. No SSN/ITIN). She will be joining me in 2011 only. She is working in that country and has income there. Can I claim exemption for her in my 1040?

You can only file as married filing jointly, married filing separately, or head of household if you have a qualifying dependent.

Thanks MukatA. If I choose any married filing status. It asks me for an SSN for my wife and she doesn't have one. The W-7 form asks for her Visa type and entry date to USA, both not applicable to my situation. So what should I do? I should file as single and not claim any dependent exemptions?
