I would like to install a utility sink in my laundry room. Currently, my washer drains into a standpipe, and I would like the sink to be a simple drainage station with no faucet, with the washer draining into the sink. I will call the local plumber for this project.

My first question is, what materials do I need to have on hand for the plumbers when they arrive? Obviously, I will purchase the sink beforehand. Are the other needed materials (drain pipes, etc.) provided by the plumbers, and generally available in the supplies they'll have in their truck?

Secondly, will the stand pipe need to be totally removed for a system such as this, or will the plumber sever the pipe close to the floor, and just connect the drain from the utility sink to it?

Let the plumber furnish the material to do the job. If you forgot something and he had to wait while you went to get it it would cost you lots more than you would save. Plus most plumbers I know, plus myself, add a 20 % charge to material that the home owner furnishes. One other thing if you furnish something and it fails it is your responsibility to get it taken care of, if the plumber furnishes it and it fails then it is his problem.

I also advise you to get a few bids, that way you can check prices and also get ideas from several people.
