Tell us more about what you are trying to do. Right now we know that you have power to the light fixture and apparently you want to control it with one switch and use another switch at the same location to control an outlet. You would not use a 3-way switch. 3-way switches are always used in pairs.
Right now it sounds like you would take power to the fixture with a 2 wire cable, use a 3 wire cable to the switch location and 3 wire from the switch location to the outlet if you want only half of the outlet be switched and half to be hot all the time.
