I am an american citizen living in canada with permanent residence status. I work sub contract work in the US for 3 - 6 months a year and I am also self employed earning income in Canada. How to I file my taxes. I have been filing in Canada for the past 20 years, but now I have US income I am wondering what changes.

As an American citizen, you are required to file an annual tax return regardless of where you live.

If you have NOT been filing, you will need to file from 2003 through 2010 (baased on guidance I recently received from the IRS on a similar case). You probably owe NOTHING in taxes on the prior year returns due to the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) and/or the Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116), but you DO have to file.

If you need professional help filing your returns, email me at [email protected]. This IS what I do!
