I'm stuck in Mexico for several more months and my CA Driver License expired 7 days ago. CA won't let me renew online. Where can I get a new DL from any state on line? If I get stopped in MX I'll go to jail and they'll take my car and all my belongings. I heard there was a mid-west state that would do this with an expired out-of state DL under 30 days old. Is this true?

No, to the best of my knowledge it's not true. You can't get a DL without proof of residence.

As a side note - why are you "stuck" in Mexico?

You're right about what they'll do to you in Mexico. But, unless you're in jail, it'll be a lot cheaper to fly to San Diego, do your business and go and back.

But, there ain't NO state that will issue a drivers license like that... No way, no how.

Some states allow for the RENEWAL of a license online. NO state allows for obtaining a license online. Licenses are only issued to residents of the state.

She gave my stuff away and all I have left is a 20 year old van and what's in it. It is now my home. Everybody happy?
Again, I read somewhere that in one of the mid-western states, you could use a 3 day temp residency with a box stop and send in a copy of you DL from another state.

I don't know where you read this but I can't find any reference to it and I doubt if its true. Have you talked to someone in the American Embassy/Consulate?

Happy?? Why would you think your misery would make us happy? Did somebody here diss you? I looked back, and all I saw was an answer to your question. Nobody knew that you were broke. Most Americans in Mexico have a few pesos in their pockets...

You asked for legal expertise. You got it. Legal expertise does NOT require a knowledge of every law in every state. For example - you could ask if there was a state that allowed shoplifting under $100. Now, it's true, I don't know every law in every state, but I can ASSURE you, Sir, there are none - just as I can assure you that no state will issue you a drives license without your presence.

But, thanks for asking... By the way, if the Mexican policia catch you sleeping on the beach with NO money to bribe them with, they'll put you in jail and take your stuff anyway, drivers license or not.

I have no idea where your attitude came from. Snapping at the very people trying to help you is not particularly a good idea. No one here claims to be an expert in "all laws in all States" but we do know how to research and we do know our stuff.

Everything else aside - YOU DON'T HAVE A VALID DL. You can't send your valid DL to another State and attempt to get a DL there because YOU DON'T HAVE A DL. IT EXPIRED.

I find no such law. I would suggest that you call the DMV in every State because I've checked 10 of them, read your reply and I'm out of the conversation.

Why you think your situation would make anybody happy is beyond me. Maybe misery loves company. I don't know.

Thanks to the fallout from 9/11 you not only have to prove you are actually who you are... IN PERSON, but you also have to prove residence to get a DL. And that's because of MINIMUM standards mandated by the Dept of Homeland Security... because too damn many illegals were getting licenses with questionable or false information. Living in a van with no money in a foreign country isn't a smart thing to be doing... unless one is on the lam for something.

And all 50 of the states have that MINIMUM standard of proof... they have to.
