I have a 2004 chev avalanche that the whole instrument cluster works sometimes and reads funny codes like pe me chch then shuts off. Other times you can hit the top of the dash and they will turn on when off. Its kind of weird but I am willing to replace what ever it is

The problem is likely a faulty solder connection on the instrument panel's printed circuit board and will require replacement and re-configuring, security coding, etc.
Prices will vary significantly from one area to another, as well as from one vendor to another. Some may offer a warranty; some don't. You should definitely call around.
Plus the shop actually doing the work could and should verify the fault.
