Tax for H1B Holder from India
    Hi,

I am on H1B from India. I am with my wife and a son.
    My questions are:

Que : 1) How many allowances I can file for.

I have counted 6 allowances as below from column mentioned below of the W-4 form.

    A) A Enter “1” for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent . --- 1
    B) Enter “1” if: • You are married, have only one job, and your spouse does not work; ---- 1
    C) Enter “1” for your spouse. --- 1
    D) Enter number of dependents (other than your spouse or yourself) you will claim on your tax return --- 1

    G) Child Tax Credit
If your total income will be less than $61,000 ($90,000 if married), enter “2” for each eligible child ---- 2

So the total of all columns is 6. Is this correct?

Que:2 ) Am I eligible for Standard Deductions?

Que 3: ) I read on your webisit that I can also file tax as resident alien. How can I do that without ITIN number?

    Please reply.

    Thanks,
    Jimi.

When did you enter U.S. on H1-B? If you did not complete substantial presence test in 2010, you must wait till you complete SPT in 2011. Then you can file joint return as residents. Your U.S. Tax Return: The U.S. Visas
